Summit of the Americas:  President Biden's Caribbean Policy

June 27, 2022 - Peter Lyn René - National Caribbean-American Heritage Month, June of every year, is ending. The Ninth Summit of the Americas, which meets every three years, was held in Los Angeles, California June 6-10, 2022, and provided an opportunity for President Biden to clearly define his policy towards the Caribbean. From the onset, there was uncertainty as to whether Caribbean nations and Mexico would attend.

May 27, 2022 - Peter Lyn René - Though President Biden's Administration has broadly defined its Caribbean Policy, the most comprehensive view of this policy is mainly articulated through the U.S. Department of State through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) and The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where the bulk of President Biden's Caribbean Policy is implemented on our "third border."

April 4, 2019 - Peter Lyn René- The Trump Administration's foreign policy towards the Caribbean has been marked by steep cuts in foreign aid and stricter immigration laws and policies. After more than two years in office, this is President Trump's first official outreach to the Caribbean, which President Ronald Reagan called our, "Third border." The Administration stated three ways it planned to engage the Caribbean: economic growth and prosperity, security and democratic governance.
